About

Hello and welcome to my online portfolio

Perceptions of luxury

A genre within the graphic design spectrum which has always fascinated me is the architecture of the ‘luxury’ brand. How successful premium brand names create a sense of quality and value through their design and publicity material varies enormously from brand to brand and this sense of luxury is interpreted by the designers and marketeers in different ways. My interest in this topic arouse when a copy of Reiss’s ‘journal’ (catalogue) dropped through my letterbox.

‘Luxury’ according to the Reiss brand clearly means a few things:

1. Size matters! – The publication is printed at A3 size giving the impressive garment and modelled photographs ample canvass space to impress the reader.

2. A no frills approach – The designers clearly wanted all attention to be on the garments and lush photography. There are no drop shadows, glows or text effects, just a strong mixture of calculated typography choices, rich photography and plenty of white space to give breathing room. The photographs are arranged in an overlapping fashion giving a seemingly ‘undesigned’ feel.

3. The publication boasts that this is a ‘journal’ not a sales catalogue and thus contains a well written account of the Reiss story.

A luxury fashion brand will of course communicate with it’s audience in a very different way to premium brands in other industries. You wouldn’t think that BMW for example would utilize the same graphical ingredients in their publicity material. Each brand is unique and aspires to be perceived in different ways by it’s audience. Good design will reflect the brand values that the organisation has built it’s value set upon.

FD2D Summer edition hits the streets of Leicester & Derby

As the summer festival season approaches with an ever increasing pace, the Spring/ Summer edition of From Dusk 2 Dawn has hit the streets of Leicester and Derby. Brace yourself for the latest installment of arts & culture news, (pre) reviews & interviews from the East Midlands. With a circulation of 20,000 printed copies the magazine can be found in any good bar, cafe, gallery or club in the two cities.

The pullout cover of this edition of the leicester issue features exclusive artwork from graffiti artist Mono as well as a three page interview with the creative himself. The below images depict some examples of the design work that I have contributed to this issue – To see the rest why not pick yourself up a copy? Or head on over to FD2D.com where you can read this issue online.

San Sebastian photographs

Following a recent trip to San Sebastian, in the Basque region of Spain, I started a little photographic experiment (just for my own amusement!) which can be previewed in the following images. I noticed that a number of the cultural institutes and businesses in the town use Eduardo Chillida’s local sculptures as inspiration for their logo’s. I’ve created illustrations which reference these logo’s and have placed them with photographs of the sculptures that initially inspired them – Returning them to home if you will!

Design Services

Whether you are looking for a one-off print run of flyers & posters or for a multi-page brochure that advertises your business services, I can design & print your promotional material in a professional manner whilst keeping those all important costs down.

Having established partnerships with printers in Leicester I will convert your promotional vision into the finished article. Working with the printers directly to produce your material can be a minefield so I like to take that complication out of my client’s hands, offering a one-stop solution for your print needs.

Feel free to get in touch for a design consultation and pricing quotation.

Your logo & branding should be at the heart of your organisation & its importance should not be underestimated when communicating with your audience.

The trademark represents you and the values that underpin your actions as a professional. I have an open and cooperative approach to identity design, listening first to your ideas and aspirations for your brand, then engaging in a thorough research process before presenting you with several suitable design proposals.

Once the concept is agreed upon I will begin a process of generating digital drafts of the various options before the idea is refined based upon our conversations. Throughout the process I put the client first, keeping you at the centre of everything I do.
